Seven accused members of Germany's far-left organization face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for attacks on locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the American move and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or remain detained.”
