France to begin intercepting small boats in Channel following UK pressure
French officials have consented to start stopping migrant vessels in the Channel, following months of insistence from the United Kingdom.
The change in policy follows the British leader wrote to the French leader asking him to support the initiative and stating there currently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French maritime police will be allowed to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their migrants, according to authoritative confirmation.
French authorities have rarely acted to prevent the overcrowded boats leaving the shoreline because it is considered too great a risk to both officers and civilians.
"It is crucial that we implement these tactics this period... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French maritime police representative says officers will start taking action at sea, with the objective of safeguarding lives.
Significantly, the official excluded the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had earlier been suggested as a possible technique to disable the propellers of the boats.
This determination to intervene at all is a major advancement, following a short-lived change towards a stricter approach this summer, which dropped off when the previous government official left government.
This was demonstrated in July, in the run-up to a meeting between the UK leader and President, when authorities were observed walking into the sea to damage the sides of a boat.
Currently French officials will again be allowed to intercept boats before they collect migrant individuals from the coastal areas of northern France, however it's uncertain how the small boats will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are presently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the people-smuggling gangs will be looking for ways to adapt to evade interception, as they have done so often in the past.
The Home Office and Downing Street have been approached for response.
